When Is the Best Time to Visit Antarctica?
The season runs from late October to March. Late October and November bring heavy ice, untouched snow and courting penguins. December and January bring the longest days, the warmest air and hatching chicks. February and March bring the best whale watching, receding ice and the deepest Antarctic Circle crossings.

Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed. Ice and weather move these patterns by weeks from season to season.
There is no bad month, only different trips. Photographers tend to favour the ends of the season; families and first-timers usually prefer the middle. The full month-by-month account is in when to visit Antarctica.
How Long Do You Need, and From Where?
A classic Peninsula voyage runs 10 to 12 days from Ushuaia, with about two days crossing the Drake each way and four or five full days of landings. Fly-cruises run 8 to 10 days from Punta Arenas with a two-hour flight to King George Island. Falklands and South Georgia voyages need 19 to 23 days.
Add at least one night in your gateway city before embarkation. Delayed luggage from North America is common enough that operators recommend it, and Ushuaia is not a place you can catch up to a departed ship.

How Bad Is the Drake Passage?
It varies from flat calm, which crews call the Drake Lake, to a genuinely rough two days, the Drake Shake. Modern ships use fin stabilisers or wave-piercing bows to reduce motion, and preventative seasickness medication works well if started before you reach open water. Flying over it costs more and shortens the voyage.
Most people find the crossing far less awful than anticipated, and the sea days are when the lecture programme actually happens. The trade-off is weighed in sailing or flying the Drake.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
A wake-up call and weather update around seven, breakfast, then a morning landing or Zodiac cruise from roughly half past eight to half past eleven. Lunch while the ship repositions, an afternoon excursion in mid-afternoon, a recap and briefing before dinner, then lectures or wildlife watching from the lounge.
Two off-ship activities a day is the norm on small ships when weather allows. Nothing is guaranteed: the expedition leader changes plans on the day, sometimes on the hour, and that flexibility is the point rather than a failure.

What Rules Will You Be Asked to Follow?
Keep at least 5 metres from wildlife and more from nesting birds and fur seals. Take no food ashore and leave nothing behind, not even a dropped tissue. Vacuum outerwear and bags before the first landing and disinfect boots before and after every one. Stay inside the flagged route the guides set.
These are IAATO visitor guidelines and operators enforce them strictly. They are also the reason the sites still look the way they do.
What Should You Budget, and What Comes Next?
Budget the whole trip rather than the fare: flights to the gateway, a hotel night before, insurance including evacuation cover your operator will specify, and any paid activities. Then choose the ship. Guest capacity and the expedition programme matter more to your experience than cabin category does.

First-time Antarctica: common questions
Do I need a visa for Antarctica?
No. Antarctica has no government and issues no visas. You need whatever entry documents Argentina or Chile requires for your gateway, and a passport valid well beyond your return.
How cold is it really?
Peninsula summer temperatures usually sit near freezing, roughly -2°C to 5°C. Wind and spray on an open Zodiac make it feel much colder, which is why layers matter more than bulk.
Is Antarctica suitable for a first expedition cruise?
Yes, provided you accept two days of open ocean or pay to fly over it, and can board a Zodiac with assistance. It is demanding logistically rather than athletically.
How far ahead should I book?
Twelve to eighteen months for peak December and January dates, solo cabins and South Georgia voyages. Six to twelve months still leaves reasonable choice on shoulder dates.
Will I definitely see penguins and whales?
Penguins, effectively yes: colonies are the core of every Peninsula itinerary. Whales are near-certain in February and March and common earlier, but nothing wild is guaranteed.
Can I use my phone and the internet aboard?
Most ships now carry satellite internet good enough for messages and email, and some include it. Treat video calls as unlikely and enjoy the disconnection.
