Which Antarctica Cruise Line Should You Choose?

Operators differ far more than ships do: what the fare covers, how hard the expedition team works you, and whether the day is built around landings or around dinner.

How Do Antarctica Operators Actually Differ?

Three things separate them: ship size, which sets landing access; the depth of the expedition programme, from kayaking and camping to submersibles and helicopters; and what the fare covers. Two operators quoting similar per-night prices can differ by thousands once flights, hotels, drinks and activities are counted.

Everyone sails broadly the same Peninsula sites. The difference you feel is who your guides are, how often you get off the ship, and what happens on a weather day.

What Are the Main Operator Categories?

Ultra-luxury expedition lines, expedition specialists, fly-cruise operators and Subantarctic specialists. Ultra-luxury buys suites, dining and inclusive fares. Specialists buy field time, science and activity programmes. Fly-cruise buys you out of the Drake Passage. Subantarctic specialists go where almost nobody else sails.

Polar Latitudes Expeditions is the merged Polar Latitudes and Albatros Expeditions business, from 2025. HX has operated independently of Hurtigruten since February 2025.

Two corrections worth stating plainly, because older comparisons still get them wrong. Albatros Expeditions no longer exists: it merged with Polar Latitudes in 2025 and now operates as Polar Latitudes Expeditions. And HX and Hurtigruten separated into independent companies in February 2025, so the polar operator is HX.

Heritage Expeditions is included here as a Subantarctic and Ross Sea specialist rather than a Peninsula operator. Its programme is long voyages to the New Zealand southern islands and the Ross Sea, which is a different trip from a ten-day Peninsula sailing.

How Much Does Guest Count Matter?

A great deal. IAATO caps landings at 100 guests ashore at a site at any one time, so ships under about 200 guests land everyone without rotation. Between 200 and 500, you go ashore in alternating groups and lose shore hours. Above 500, no landings are permitted at all.

This is the first filter to apply to any operator's fleet, before dining or cabin category. Detail sits in our Antarctica expedition ships guide.

What Is Usually Included in the Fare?

Expect landings, Zodiac cruising, all meals, lectures and usually a parka and loaned boots. Charter flights, gateway hotel nights, drinks packages, gratuities and Wi-Fi vary widely. Kayaking, camping, snowshoeing, diving, helicopter flightseeing and submersible dives are almost always extra and capped in numbers.

Compare fares as a total including flights to the gateway, the hotel night before, insurance and the activities you actually want. We work that arithmetic in the Antarctica cost guide and the expedition costs breakdown.

Firsthand: on the Greg Mortimer with Aurora Expeditions in December 2024, the parka was ours to keep, boots were loaned, and the activity programme was the reason to be aboard. On the World Navigator with Atlas Ocean Voyages in February 2024, the fare was more inclusive on the hotel and drinks side and the ship sailed Antarctica capped near 160 guests against a 196 maximum. Both are written up in the Greg Mortimer journal and the World Navigator journal.

Which Operator Type Suits You?

Choose an expedition specialist under 200 guests if shore time, kayaking, camping or citizen science drive the trip. Choose an ultra-luxury line if suites, dining and inclusive door-to-door logistics matter more than a third landing. Choose a fly-cruise operator if the Drake Passage or a short holiday allowance is the constraint.

We book across all of these and hold no preferred-partner arrangement that would push you toward one. The right answer is usually obvious once we know your tolerance for cold, ocean and early starts.

Antarctica operators: common questions

Does Albatros Expeditions still operate in Antarctica?

No. Albatros Expeditions merged with Polar Latitudes in 2025 and the business now operates as Polar Latitudes Expeditions. Older comparisons still list the old brand.

Is HX the same company as Hurtigruten?

Not since February 2025. HX and Hurtigruten separated into independent companies. HX is the expedition operator; Hurtigruten runs the Norwegian coastal service.

Which operators run the best activity programmes?

The expedition specialists. Quark, Oceanwide, Aurora Expeditions, Lindblad and HX run kayaking, snowshoeing, camping and in some cases diving. Ultra-luxury lines lean toward Zodiac cruising, helicopters and submersibles.

Do you have a preferred Antarctic operator?

No. We book across every major line and match the operator to the traveler. We will tell you where we think a line falls short for what you want.

Are ultra-luxury fares actually better value?

Sometimes. When a fare includes charter flights, hotels, drinks and gratuities, the gap narrows considerably. Compare totals rather than headline per-night rates.
