Expedition Travel Should Feel Effortless.

Expedition itineraries are unforgiving in a way ordinary cruises aren't. There's usually one flight a day to where you're going, one ship leaving on one date, and no way to catch up if you miss it.

So I build in margin. Nobody I book flies into Ushuaia or Punta Arenas on embarkation day — you arrive at least the night before, and often two. It costs a hotel night and it removes the single biggest risk in the whole trip.

I check your insurance against your ship's actual requirements. Polar operators require medical evacuation coverage, and the limits vary by operator and by region. Most travelers assume their existing policy covers it. Many don't, and finding out at the pier is not the moment.

Then there's everything around the edges: which airline handles a missed connection to Buenos Aires well and which doesn't, whether the ship supplies the parka and loans the boots, how far in advance kayaking and camping spots need to be requested, and whether a solo cabin exists on the departure you want or whether we should be looking at a no-single-supplement sailing instead.

None of this is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a trip that works and one that doesn't.
