Combining the Kimberley With Wider Australian Travel

The airfare to reach this coast is long and expensive, so most travellers make it work harder. Kakadu and Arnhem Land from Darwin, the Red Centre, Ningaloo from the west, or the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns.

Is It Worth Extending a Kimberley Cruise?

For most travellers from North America or Europe, yes. You have already absorbed a long-haul flight plus a domestic leg, and the marginal cost of another few days inside Australia is small next to that. Extending also gives you a buffer either side of the sailing.

The choice is really about direction. Finishing in Darwin points you toward Kakadu, Arnhem Land and the Red Centre; finishing in Broome points you toward Western Australia and the Coral Coast. That is a good reason to choose your itinerary direction deliberately rather than by price alone — see our itineraries guide.

What Can You Add From Darwin?

Kakadu and Arnhem Land, three to five days. Ubirr rock art, billabong cruises, wetland birdlife and waterfalls, on country that reads very differently to the saltwater coast you have just sailed. Litchfield works as a shorter alternative if you have only a couple of days.

Choose extensions that match the end of your voyage. Crossing the country twice for a four-day add-on rarely repays the flying.

The pairing works because it is a contrast rather than a repetition: freshwater wetland systems after a tidal saltwater coast. Clients consistently tell us the two together made more sense of the north than either alone.

Access in Arnhem Land is permit-based and generally arranged through operators. The same respect for Traditional Owner access that applies on the Kimberley coast applies here — our responsible travel page sets out how we think about it.

Should You Add Uluru and the Red Centre?

If you have never been, yes — three to four days from Alice Springs or Ayers Rock airport. Base walks at Uluru and Kata Tjuta, the Field of Light installation and desert dining are the standard shape. It is a flight rather than a drive from either Kimberley gateway.

Late in the Kimberley season the desert nights are cold, which surprises people arriving from the tropics. Pack for both if you are combining them.

Ningaloo or the Great Barrier Reef?

Ningaloo if you want to swim with whale sharks, roughly April to July, and it is easier to reach from the western end. The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree if you want outer reef diving and rainforest, four to six days from Cairns or Port Douglas, which suits a Darwin finish better.

Both are warm-water reef destinations, so pick one rather than both. If diving is the point of the trip, we would rather talk you into a longer reef stay than a rushed pair.

Our diving and snorkelling page covers what to expect from reef time on an expedition trip.

How Do the Flights Actually Work?

Darwin connects directly to Alice Springs, Cairns and Sydney, which makes it a straightforward departure point after a northbound voyage. Broome connects directly to Perth year-round and seasonally to Sydney and Melbourne, which suits Western Australia extensions.

Domestic legs in Australia are long — several hours between capitals — so a two-stop extension can cost a day in the air. Build one recovery night into any combination rather than stacking flights back to back.

Our Broome and Darwin guide covers the gateway nights either side of the sailing itself.

Have You Travelled These Extensions?

No. Australia is ahead of us — we sail the Kimberley in 2027 with Seabourn, and this will be our first time in the country. The routing advice here comes from building these trips for clients and from what they told us worked and did not. We will rewrite it once we have done it.

Anything that reflects client experience is labelled that way rather than presented as ours. See where we've been.

Extension questions

What is the best add-on after a Kimberley cruise?

Kakadu and Arnhem Land from Darwin if you finish in the north, and the Coral Coast or Ningaloo if you finish in Broome. Both avoid crossing the country twice.

How long do you need for Uluru?

Three to four days covers the base walks at Uluru and Kata Tjuta without rushing, plus a sunrise and a sunset.

When can you swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo?

Roughly April to July, which overlaps the earlier part of the Kimberley cruise season.

Should you add the Great Barrier Reef to a Kimberley trip?

It works well from a Darwin finish via Cairns, and four to six days is realistic. If you also want Ningaloo, choose one reef rather than both.
