What Is There to Do in Broome?
Cable Beach runs for around 22 kilometres and is the reason most people stay. Add the red pindan cliffs and dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point, and the South Sea pearling history that built the town, and two nights fills comfortably before you board.

| Gateway | Why stay | Suggested nights | Air connections |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broome, Western Australia | Cable Beach, Gantheaume Point, pearling history, Indian Ocean sunsets | Two before, one after | Direct to Perth year-round; seasonal direct to Sydney and Melbourne |
| Darwin, Northern Territory | MAGNT Aboriginal art collection, Mindil Beach markets, wartime sites, harbour dining | Two either end if extending | Direct to Sydney, Cairns, Alice Springs and more; best base for Kakadu and Litchfield |
Broome's east-coast direct flights are seasonal, so connection counts change with your sailing month.
Broome is small, hot and unhurried, which is the right introduction to this coast. Sunset over the Indian Ocean from the beach is the fixed point in the day and everything else arranges itself around it.
A pearling history tour is the one thing clients consistently mention afterwards, because it explains why a town exists here at all.
What Is There to Do in Darwin?
A tropical harbour city with a serious food scene, the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets in season, significant Second World War sites, and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, whose Aboriginal art collection is worth a slow half-day on its own.
Darwin is also the practical base for Litchfield and Kakadu, which is why it is the better end to extend if you want land time. Our Australia add-ons guide sets out what that looks like.
Allow two days if you want the museum and the markets without rushing either.
How Many Nights Should You Allow Either End?
Two nights before the voyage and at least one after. Both towns are reached by long domestic flights, often with a connection, and one night before boarding leaves no margin for a delayed bag or a cancelled leg. Ships in the Kimberley do not wait.
The morning of embarkation can also involve a transfer of some length, so arriving rested matters more here than it does on a European sailing.
If you are flying from North America, treat the day you lose crossing the date line as real and add it to the plan rather than absorbing it.
How Do You Get to Broome and Darwin?
Broome has direct flights to Perth year-round and seasonal direct services to Sydney and Melbourne. Darwin connects directly to Sydney, Cairns and Alice Springs among others. Most international travellers route through Sydney, Melbourne or Perth and take a domestic leg from there.
Because Broome's direct east-coast services are seasonal, the same itinerary can be a one-stop or a two-stop journey depending on your month. That is worth checking before you commit to a direction of travel.
Our itineraries guide covers which direction — Broome to Darwin or the reverse — suits which traveller, and the flights are part of that answer.
Where Do the Ships Actually Board?
It varies, and it matters. Some Broome departures use tender transfers from Cable Beach; others board at the deep-water jetty. Darwin ships normally use the port. Confirm your embarkation point before you book transfers, because the two Broome options are not close together.
Tides affect this as well, which is why a Broome boarding time can look unusual on paper. Our tides guide explains the underlying reason.
Have You Been to Broome or Darwin?
Not yet. Our Kimberley voyage is in 2027 with Seabourn, and that will be our first time in either town. What follows comes from planning these trips for clients and from the debriefs afterwards, and we would rather tell you that than imply we have walked Cable Beach ourselves.
Hotel and timing advice here reflects what has worked for people we have booked. See where we've been for the full record of where we have and have not travelled.
Gateway town questions
How many nights should you spend in Broome before a Kimberley cruise?
Two. The flights in are long and often involve a connection, and one night leaves no margin if a leg is delayed. Ships here do not wait.
Is Darwin or Broome the better place to extend?
Darwin, if you want land time, because Kakadu and Litchfield are close. Broome suits a slower beach stay and the pearling history.
Can you fly directly to Broome from Sydney?
There are seasonal direct services from Sydney and Melbourne, and year-round direct flights from Perth. Outside the seasonal window you will connect.
Where do Kimberley cruises board in Broome?
Either at the deep-water jetty or by tender from Cable Beach, depending on the ship and the tide. Confirm which before arranging transfers.
