Greenland sits above standard European travel for a simple reason: the infrastructure is expedition infrastructure. Ice-class ships, Zodiac fleets, expert field staff and remote charter logistics are the product, not an upgrade to it.
Within one sailing, cabin choice can swing the price two to four times over, so the honest comparison is a specific cabin on a specific departure against the same on a rival ship — never one brochure headline against another.
What Is Included in a Greenland Cruise Fare?
On a small-ship expedition fare: accommodation, all meals, daily Zodiac landings and cruising, the naturalist and lecture programme, and usually rubber boot or gear loans. Ultra-luxury fares add private balconies, gourmet dining, an open bar and frequently the charter flights themselves.
The inclusions worth confirming before comparing two fares: whether charter flights are bundled or separate, whether the parka is a gift or a loan, whether gratuities are prepaid, and what the drinks policy actually covers.

What Do Flights and Logistics Add?
Budget $800 to $1,800 on top of most fares for getting to the ship: direct transatlantic flights to Nuuk, or charters and connections through Copenhagen or Reykjavík. West Greenland itineraries depend on Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq; many East Greenland voyages avoid internal charters entirely by embarking in Iceland.
Gateway choice is a cost decision as much as a routing one. A voyage that embarks where you can fly directly — Reykjavík for the east coast, Nuuk for the west — removes a charter leg, a hotel night and a point of failure.
Weather delays are a real feature of Arctic aviation, not an edge case. Buffers matter more here than almost anywhere else we send travellers.
Which Extras Move the Budget?
Four things: specialized onboard activities such as guided sea kayaking, ice-sheet heli-hiking or diving, which carry separate booking fees; helicopter day tours at $1,500 to $3,500; crew gratuities of $15 to $25 per person per day where they are not prepaid; and mandatory port taxes and park permits, which most lines include.
Helicopter excursions deserve a decision before you sail. Heli-hiking over the ice sheet, remote camp overnights and deep-fjord flightseeing are genuinely extraordinary — and priced per day, per person, accordingly.
Kayaking is the reverse: modest fee, enormous return. Paddling a Greenlandic fjord at water level among grounded bergs is the excursion our clients mention most afterward.
How Can You Reduce the Cost of Greenland?
Book 12 to 18 months ahead for early-booking promotions, sail the shoulder weeks of June or September rather than peak July, choose a lower cabin category — the expedition ashore is identical — and pick an itinerary that embarks at a direct-flight gateway so charters and buffer hotels fall away.
What does not save money is waiting for a last-minute deal. Greenland inventory is small, the best departures sell out, and the discounts that do appear are usually on the sailings and cabins nobody wanted.

Yes, seasonally. United Airlines operates a summer nonstop between Newark and Nuuk — resumed for a second season in June 2026 — otherwise connections run through Copenhagen or Reykjavík.
