Why does Antarctica need citizen scientists?

Antarctica is the world's largest laboratory, but it is short of scientists. Expedition ships reach places research vessels rarely visit, and every guest with a camera or a water sampler becomes a data point for global science — which is why impact travel has shifted from a niche interest to a primary reason people go south.

How do you help track whales and ocean health?

The Secchi disk is the low-tech companion: a white disk lowered into the water until it disappears, measuring how melting glacial freshwater is changing ocean clarity.

A growing priority is microplastics: some voyages collect and sieve shoreline samples to map the reach of human impact in this remote wilderness.

What do the atmospheric and ice programmes involve?

Through NASA GLOBE Cloud, guests record cloud cover and conditions — satellites look down at the ice, but they need observers looking up to ground-truth what they see. Other programmes include sea-ice mapping, temperature readings, thermal-imaging pilots, and photographing the red and green snow algae that accelerate melt.

Snow algae — the 'watermelon snow' you will see staining slopes red or green — is more than a curiosity. Because dark algae absorb more heat, these blooms can actually accelerate ice melt, and guest photos help scientists study melt rates.

Sea-ice mapping and thermal observations help scientists study the literal foundation of the Antarctic ecosystem. None of it requires equipment beyond what the ship provides.

Can you help monitor seabirds and penguins?

Yes. Guests log bird species and counts through eBird — a primary activity during the Drake Passage crossing — helping map distribution and population change. Some expedition teams also assign guests a sector of a penguin colony to count occupied nests or chicks, tracking breeding success.

What can you contribute on shore landings?

With the iNaturalist app, guests photograph plants, mosses, lichens and invertebrates during shore landings. When experts verify your photo, it becomes research-grade data used by scientists worldwide. Some trips also run seaweed and shoreline baseline studies along the rocky Antarctic coast.

How do you choose a ship with a real science programme?

Look for expedition-class vessels with a dedicated science centre and a full-time citizen science coordinator. These ships are built to handle sampling equipment and provide lab space for guests — and the difference between a token programme and a genuine one is usually that coordinator.
