Based on our own kit across two Iceland land trips and a circumnavigation, not a manufacturer's list.
FIRSTHAND: across three Iceland trips the items we used every single day were the shell, the boots and the swimsuit. The items that stayed in the bag were the heavy parka in summer and, on the road trip, most of the camera kit beyond one lens.
What Should You Pack for Iceland in April or Another Shoulder Month?
Winter clothing with summer daylight. Expect snow on high ground, meltwater underfoot, wind-driven rain and sun in the same afternoon. Waterproof boots, insulated gloves, a warm hat and full waterproofs matter more in April than in July, and traction devices are worth carrying.
FIRSTHAND: on our ten days in April 2023 we wore a base layer, fleece and shell almost continuously, changed socks daily because everything was wet, and used slip-on ice grips on paths near waterfalls and glacier tongues where the spray had frozen. We would not repeat that trip without them.
FIRSTHAND: sunglasses surprised us. Low April sun off snow and wet road is harsh for hours a day.
Shoulder-season conditions and what closes when are in when to visit Iceland.
How Is Summer Packing Different?
Lighter insulation, same waterproofs. Summer temperatures sit around 10–15°C, so drop the heavy layers and keep the shell, a fleece and a light down jacket for evenings and Zodiacs. Add an eye mask, because in June it does not get dark.
FIRSTHAND: the midnight sun caught us out more than the cold on our late May and early June voyage. An eye mask is not a luxury item in Iceland in June.
What Does an Expedition Voyage Add to the List?
Waterproof trousers for Zodiac spray, a dry bag for camera gear, tall waterproof boots for wet landings if the ship does not supply them, binoculars, and one smart-casual outfit for dinner. Most Iceland expedition ships are casual, but not all are.
Ask before you pack whether boots and a parka are loaned. Iceland-focused ships vary more than polar ships do — see the Iceland cruise guide.
For polar voyages the requirements step up again, and the fuller list lives in the Greenland packing list and what to pack for an expedition cruise.
Do You Need a Swimsuit in Iceland?
Yes, on every trip, and keep it in the daypack rather than the suitcase. Municipal pools and geothermal lagoons appear wherever you are, port days included, and swimwear is required in the water while showering beforehand is done without it.
A quick-dry towel earns its space; hotel towels do not travel. More on the baths in Iceland's hot springs and geothermal baths.
What Camera Kit Is Worth Carrying in Iceland?
One wide lens for landscapes and waterfalls, a telephoto around 200–400mm if birds or whales matter, a polarising filter, a lens cloth you can reach quickly, and spare batteries kept warm. A tripod is only worth it if you plan to shoot the aurora or long exposures.
FIRSTHAND: on the ship the long lens paid for itself at the bird cliffs and in Skjalfandi Bay. On the road trip it mostly stayed in the car, and the wide lens and a microfibre cloth did the work — the spray at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss means the cloth is used constantly.
For aurora nights add the tripod and manual focus — see northern lights in Iceland.
What Should You Leave at Home?
An umbrella, cotton clothing, a full-length winter parka in summer, single-use toiletries and jeans. Wind and horizontal rain make umbrellas useless, cotton stays wet, and laundry facilities are widely available in guesthouses and on ships.
Bring less than you think, wash more often. Iceland is expensive; a forgotten fleece is not the crisis a poor jacket is.
Packing questions
What do you wear in Iceland in April?
Base layer, fleece and a waterproof shell most of the day, with waterproof boots, gloves and a wind-proof hat. Carry ice grips for frozen spray near waterfalls and glaciers.
Do you need waterproof trousers in Iceland?
On a road trip they are useful; on an expedition voyage they are essential, because Zodiac spray soaks anything else within minutes.
Should you bring an umbrella to Iceland?
No. Rain arrives horizontally and the wind destroys umbrellas. A hooded shell does the job.
Do ships in Iceland provide boots and parkas?
Some do and some do not. It varies more on Iceland-focused vessels than on polar expedition ships, so confirm with the operator before buying.
How much camera gear should you take?
One wide lens, a telephoto if birds or whales matter, a polariser, a cloth for spray, and warm spare batteries. Add a tripod only for aurora or long exposures.
Is Iceland packing the same as a polar voyage?
No. Iceland is wetter and milder; polar voyages need heavier insulation and more layers. The polar list is in our Greenland packing guide.
