What Is the Best Time to Visit Raja Ampat Overall?
October to April. Winds drop, the sea flattens, visibility is at its best and the whole archipelago is reachable, from the Wayag lagoons in the north to southern Misool. Most operators concentrate their Raja Ampat departures inside this window, which is why availability tightens well before the season starts.

Months are indicative. Verify against the specific departure, because operators position vessels around wider regional programmes.
Raja Ampat sits close to the equator, so there is no cold season and no dry season in the sense a temperate traveller would recognise. What changes is wind, and wind changes sea state, and sea state decides which sites a tender can reach on a given morning.
Within the calm window, November to March is usually the strongest for underwater clarity. December and January bring more rain in short heavy bursts, which affects the deck rather than the diving.
What Happens During the Southeast Monsoon?
From roughly July to September the southeast winds build, open passages get choppy and southern Misool sites are frequently unworkable. Northern itineraries around Waigeo, Kabui Bay and Aljui Bay stay far more sheltered, so voyages in these months tend to be northern voyages by design rather than accident.
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you compare departures. A July sailing is not a worse version of a February sailing; it is a different itinerary, weighted north, with more shallow lagoon snorkelling and more time in bays.
If you are travelling in these months, vessel size matters more than usual. A larger ocean-going expedition ship with active stabilisers crosses open passages far more comfortably than a small traditional wooden vessel.
When Should You Go for Specific Wildlife?
Reef mantas gather at Dampier Strait cleaning stations through the calm months, when the water is clear enough to watch them properly. Whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay are present close to year round, but April to June and October to November usually give the calmest passage east. Birds of paradise display in the early morning in any month.
Cenderawasih Bay is a separate region, not a day trip from the Dampier Strait. Reaching it requires a longer voyage, and the ships that go there tend to be the ones running two-week itineraries. Our guide to Cenderawasih Bay covers what that adds.
Clients tell us the wildlife encounters that stayed with them were rarely the ones they had planned around — a wobbegong under an overhang, a school of baitfish under a village jetty. The calendar shapes the odds; it does not issue guarantees.
When Is Visibility Best for Diving and Snorkelling?
November through March is the reliable answer, with flat surface conditions and clear water over the reefs. Visibility in Raja Ampat is also tide-driven: the currents that feed these reefs carry plankton, so the richest sites are not always the clearest ones, and a clear day is not automatically the better dive.
Experienced divers often prefer the slightly greener water that comes with a running current, because that is when the pelagic action at sites like Blue Magic and Cape Kri is at its strongest. The trade-off is described in our diving guide.

Why Do Operator Schedules Differ So Much?
Because each ship is positioning around a wider regional programme. Some vessels stay in Indonesia year round and sail Raja Ampat repeatedly; others arrive between Australian, Pacific or polar seasons and offer only a handful of departures. That is why two operators can publish completely different Raja Ampat months without either being wrong.
Practically, this means the dates you can actually book are narrower than the season suggests, especially for dive-led itineraries. We work backwards from your available dates to the ships that are genuinely in the region then, rather than starting from a favourite ship.
