What Actually Matters When Choosing a Raja Ampat Ship?
Four things: how many guests share the reefs with you, whether diving is a proper programme or an add-on, whether the itinerary reaches Wayag or Misool, and how the ship handles open water. Cabin quality is the easiest of these to judge from a brochure and the least likely to shape your week.

| Operator and vessel | Style and capacity | Onboard emphasis | Itinerary focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqua Expeditions, Aqua Blu | Luxury yacht, 15 suites, about 30 guests | High crew ratio, custom dive tenders, single-seating dining | Seven-night north or south circuits from Sorong, diving-led |
| Swan Hellenic, SH Minerva and SH Diana | Expedition ship, about 152 guests | Structured dive programme, naturalist team, observation lounges | Raja Ampat with Cenderawasih Bay extensions, culture and WWII history |
| Aurora Expeditions | Expedition ship, about 130 guests | Long-established dive operation, kayaking, sea-level Zodiac platforms | Active itineraries, some reaching Cenderawasih Bay |
| Coral Expeditions, Coral Adventurer | Australian-crewed small ship, about 120 guests | Open bridge, purpose-built excursion tenders, snorkelling-led | Long voyages pairing Raja Ampat with the Spice Islands, up to about 18 nights |
| Heritage Expeditions, Heritage Adventurer | Expedition vessel, about 140 guests | Large Zodiac fleet, lecture theatre, natural history focus | In-depth natural history and Papuan village landings |
| Ponant | Luxury expedition, roughly 180 to 264 guests | Marina platform, French dining, spa, active stabilisation | Island hopping, often combined with Spice Islands transits |
| Scenic, Scenic Eclipse II | Discovery yacht, about 228 guests | All-suite, helicopter and submersible, extensive dining | Comfort-led exploration with aerial and submersible excursions |
Capacities are operator figures and vary by configuration. Deployment changes season to season; we confirm which vessel is running which itinerary before quoting.
Go smaller if
- Diving is the reason for the trip
- You want every guest in the water at the same time
- Shallow anchorages and flexible plans matter to you
- You would rather have 30 fellow guests than 200
Go larger if
- Open-water crossings worry you
- You want a spa, choice of restaurants and a balcony
- Snorkelling rather than diving is your water time
- Medical facilities and a doctor aboard are a priority
Guest numbers work differently here than in the polar regions. There is no landing-party limit driving the arithmetic; the constraint is tenders and reef space. Thirty guests means everyone is in the water at once. Two hundred means rotation, and it means the reef sees several groups a day.
Ice class, hull strength and polar terminology are irrelevant on these voyages, whatever the marketing says. What matters in the open crossings between Sorong, Misool and the north is length, beam and active stabilisation.
What Do the Small Yachts Offer?
Access and flexibility. A vessel carrying around 30 guests can anchor in shallow bays larger ships cannot enter, change plan on the morning's conditions, and put every guest in the water simultaneously. Aqua Expeditions' Aqua Blu, with 15 suites, is the reference point in this category.
The trade-offs are real. Small vessels move more in open water, carry fewer public spaces, and have limited medical facilities a long way from a hospital. The crossings to Misool and north to Wayag are where guests notice the difference.
This category also includes traditional Indonesian wooden phinisi vessels, which are not expedition ships and which we assess individually rather than as a class. Where a client wants one we look at the specific vessel's build, safety documentation and dive operation before we book it.

What About the Mid-Size Expedition Ships?
They are the practical compromise for most travellers: stable across the crossings, properly staffed with naturalists, and small enough to run a real tender operation. Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva and SH Diana, Coral Expeditions' Coral Adventurer, Heritage Adventurer and Aurora Expeditions' ships all sit in this band.
Each has a distinct character. Swan Hellenic runs a dedicated dive programme and a strong lecture and culture emphasis. Coral Expeditions is Australian-crewed with an open bridge and the longest Raja Ampat voyages, pairing the archipelago with the Spice Islands. Heritage Adventurer carries a large Zodiac fleet and leans hardest into natural history and village landings. Aurora Expeditions brings two decades of dive-programme experience and an active-adventure emphasis including kayaking.

And the Larger Luxury Ships?
Ponant and Scenic bring the most comfort, the smoothest crossings and the highest fares. Ponant's vessels carry roughly 180 to 264 guests with a marina platform and French dining; Scenic Eclipse II carries about 228 in all-suite accommodation with a helicopter and submersible aboard.
Understand what you are buying. On these ships Raja Ampat is a sequence of well-run excursions from a hotel that moves, and the water time is rotated. For travellers who want the region without roughing it, that is exactly right, and the ships are excellent at it.
For a diver, it is usually the wrong choice. Diving on the largest vessels is a limited offering rather than the spine of the day. If tanks are the point of the trip, look smaller.
Which Ships Run Serious Dive Programmes?
Aqua Blu is built around diving. Swan Hellenic runs a structured programme with certification requirements. Aurora Expeditions has a long-established dive operation. Coral Expeditions and Heritage offer snorkelling with limited or itinerary-dependent diving, and the largest luxury ships treat diving as an amenity.

Ask three specific questions of any operator: what certification level is required, is nitrox available, and how many dives a day are scheduled. The answers separate the programmes far more reliably than the brochure language does.
Certification, current and reef-hook detail is on our diving page, and what non-divers get out of the same reefs on snorkelling.
Which Ships Reach Wayag, Misool and Cenderawasih Bay?
Reach is a function of voyage length rather than vessel size. Seven-night itineraries cover the north or the south, not both. Wayag needs a longer or explicitly northern route. Cenderawasih Bay needs twelve nights or more and appears on a handful of Swan Hellenic, Coral Expeditions and Aurora itineraries.
Two ships of similar size can therefore offer completely different trips. Compare day-by-day itineraries, not specifications, and see north vs south and Cenderawasih Bay for what each adds.
Deployment also moves. Vessels are repositioned between regions season by season, so a ship that ran Raja Ampat last year may not this year. We confirm the current schedule rather than quoting last season's.
Have You Sailed Any of These Ships in Raja Ampat?
Not in Raja Ampat. We sail the region in 2027. We have been aboard several of these vessels elsewhere, and we have toured others during industry inspections, which tells us about the ships but not about how they run this itinerary. Client reports and an advisor colleague's recent voyage fill that gap.
We keep the two apart. Where we describe a cabin, a dive deck or a tender platform we have often seen it. Where we describe how a Raja Ampat day runs aboard it, we are relaying clients' accounts and our colleague's notes, and we say which.
Ships we have genuinely sailed are listed on ships we've sailed, including what we did and did not see aboard each.
Raja Ampat ship questions
What is the best ship for diving Raja Ampat?
Among cruise vessels, Aqua Blu is built around diving with about 30 guests and custom dive tenders. Swan Hellenic and Aurora Expeditions run structured dive programmes on larger ships. The biggest luxury vessels treat diving as an amenity rather than a programme.
How many guests do Raja Ampat expedition ships carry?
From about 30 on a yacht such as Aqua Blu, through 120 to 152 on small expedition ships like Coral Adventurer, Heritage Adventurer and SH Minerva, up to roughly 180 to 264 on Ponant and Scenic vessels.
Do you need an ice-strengthened ship for Raja Ampat?
No. These are equatorial voyages and ice class is irrelevant. What matters in the open crossings is vessel length, beam and active stabilisation.
Which ships visit Cenderawasih Bay?
A small number of longer itineraries, generally twelve nights or more, run by operators including Swan Hellenic, Coral Expeditions and Aurora Expeditions. Check that the bay appears as named days in the itinerary.
