What Is the Best Month to Cruise Baja?
February is the strongest single month. Gray whale mothers and newborn calves are at their peak in the Pacific lagoons, blue whales are already feeding in the Gulf of California, and a seven or eight-night voyage can reasonably reach both. Water is cool, and that is the trade.
March is close behind and often calmer for guests who dislike wind. January works but the lagoons are earlier in the calving cycle. April swings toward blue whales, mobula rays and warmer air at the cost of the lagoon peak.
We should be plain about where this comes from. Neither of us has been to Baja yet — we sail in 2027. This page is built from published research, from feedback from the many clients we have sent who came back praising both the wildlife and the ships, and from a detailed debrief by a fellow advisor who took a group through the lagoons. Where those three disagree we say so rather than smoothing it over.
How Do the Three Baja Seasons Differ?
Peak whale season from January to March is cetacean-led: lagoon skiff outings on the Pacific side, blue, humpback and fin whales in the Gulf. April and May trade whales for heat, kayaking and mobula ray aggregations. October to December is the warm-water window, with whale sharks in La Paz bay.

| Season | Climate and water | Wildlife | What the days look like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak whale season (January to March) | Warm days around 72 to 80°F; cooler sea, roughly 66 to 72°F | Gray whale mothers and calves in Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio; blue, humpback and fin whales in the Gulf | Lagoon skiff outings on the Pacific side, deep-water whale searching in the Gulf |
| Late spring (April to May) | Hotter desert air, 80 to 90°F; sea warming | Feeding blue whales, migratory seabirds, mobula ray aggregations | Coastal kayaking, island walks, photography from the bow |
| Autumn and early winter (October to December) | Sunny, 82 to 91°F; warmest water, 77 to 82°F | Whale sharks in La Paz bay, active juvenile sea lions at Los Islotes | Snorkelling, paddleboarding, clear-water swimming |
Temperatures are typical ranges, not guarantees. Gray whale numbers vary year to year and no operator can promise an encounter.
The temperatures below are typical rather than promised. Baja is a desert beside a deep sea, so mornings on an open skiff can feel cold in a month whose afternoons reach the eighties.
When Are the Gray Whales in the Lagoons?
Eastern Pacific gray whales arrive in the Baja nursery lagoons through January, peak with newborn calves in February and early March, and thin out through April as they start north. Magdalena Bay, San Ignacio and Ojo de Liebre are the three main lagoons.

In these lagoons, gray whales have approached small boats of their own accord since the 1970s. It is one of a very small number of places on earth where a wild whale initiates contact with people, and that is genuinely different from an encounter created with bait or food.
Our position follows from that difference: let the whale decide. We do not coach travellers to reach for a whale, and we do not sell the trip on touching one. It may happen. It may not, on your day, in your skiff. Mexican regulations cap how many boats work an active whale zone at once precisely so the animals keep the choice, and that cap is a feature rather than an inconvenience. How we think about encounters like this is set out on found, or arranged?, and the lagoons themselves are covered in our gray whale guide.
When Do Blue Whales Move Through the Sea of Cortez?
Blue whales concentrate around Loreto and the Gulf islands from late January through April, feeding in nutrient-rich water along the island drop-offs. Fin and humpback whales overlap with them, and large pods of common dolphins are possible on almost any transit day.
Loreto Bay National Marine Park is the reliable part of this picture, and it is why several itineraries build in island days near Isla Carmen and Isla Danzante. Island by island detail is in our Sea of Cortez guide.
When Is the Water Warm Enough for Snorkelling?
Autumn is the warm-water season, roughly 77 to 82°F from October to December, and it is when snorkelling and paddling are most comfortable. Winter water in the Gulf runs cooler, around 66 to 72°F. Wetsuits are provided on the small ships, and most guests are glad of them.

This is the main reason the calendar does not resolve into one perfect week. The warmest water and the gray whale peak sit at opposite ends of the season. Clients who care most about being in the water often choose autumn and accept fewer whales; clients who came for whales accept a wetsuit.
Autumn also brings the whale sharks that gather in the shallows of Bahía de La Paz. Species detail is in our Baja wildlife guide.
How Far Ahead Should You Book?
Nine to twelve months for February and March departures. The Baja fleet is small — vessels carrying 60 to 100 guests — so a single popular week sells out long before a comparable date in Alaska would, and lagoon-day itineraries go first.
Fares and what each operator includes are set out in what a Baja cruise costs, and the vessels themselves in Baja ships compared.
Baja timing questions
Is February really better than March?
For newborn gray whale calves, usually yes. March is often calmer and still good, and it can be the better choice for travellers who are wind-sensitive or want slightly warmer water.
Can one voyage cover both coasts?
Some do. Itineraries that include a Pacific lagoon day alongside Sea of Cortez island days exist in February and March, usually reaching the lagoon by overland transfer or by anchoring outside the lagoon bar. Others stay entirely in the Gulf.
Will we definitely see a gray whale up close?
No, and nobody can promise it. The whales approach boats of their own accord, numbers vary between seasons, and boat numbers in active whale zones are limited by Mexican regulation. We describe it as something that may happen.
Is the water warm enough to snorkel in February?
It is swimmable in a wetsuit, which the small ships provide, but it is cool — roughly 66 to 72°F. If in-water time is your priority, autumn is the better season.
When do the whale sharks arrive in La Paz?
Juvenile whale sharks feed in the shallows of Bahía de La Paz from roughly October into spring. A small number of operators build departures around that window.
