The GalĂĄpagos Islandsâa realm of fearless wildlife, volcanic landscapes, and pristine watersâawait you! This is not just any tropical vacation; it's an adventure requiring a specific kind of gear. From hiking across lava fields to snorkeling alongside sea lions, the right packing strategy will ensure you're comfortable, protected, and ready for every moment. From our various trips to the Galapagos, we have learned what is essential to pack.
Here is your, expert-curated packing list to conquer the GalĂĄpagos:
âď¸ Clothing: Layering is Key to GalĂĄpagos Comfortđ
The weather in the GalĂĄpagos can shift quickly. Mornings may start cool, transitioning to hot, sunny afternoons. Layeringis the golden rule!
Daywear & Excursions
Focus on lightweight, quick-drying fabrics that offer maximum protection from the equatorial sun.
Lightweight Long-Sleeve Shirts: Crucial for sun protection during long excursions. Look for UPF-rated fabric.
T-shirts / Tank Tops: Great for layering or for when the midday heat hits.
Quick-Dry Shorts/Skorts: Ideal for comfort and ease of movement during landings and hikes.
Lightweight Pants: Perfect for cooler evenings or when you want more sun/insect protection.
Swimsuits (2-3): A must! As you know, thereâs nothing worse than putting on a wet swimsuit for the afternoon snorkel. Having a few on rotation guarantees a dry, fresh suit for every marine adventure.
Hat with Brim or Cap: Essential to protect your face and neck from the intense sun. A chin strap is highly recommended!
Sunglasses (UV Protection): Bring a high-quality pair to protect your eyes from the bright glare off the water and volcanic rock. Polarized is a bonus since you are on the water.
Evening & Ship Wear
The dress code on most GalĂĄpagos ships and excursions is refreshingly casual. Comfort rules!
Casual Bottoms: Shorts, skorts, skirts, or pants are all perfectly suitable for dinner and relaxing onboard.
T-shirts / Tank Tops: Simple and comfortable for unwinding.
Light Sweater or Light Rain Jacket/Windbreaker: Essential for breezy nights on deck or a cool zodiac ride. The windbreaker doubles as protection against an unexpected light shower.
đ Footwear: Ready for Land and Sea
You'll be doing "dry landings" (stepping directly onto land) and "wet landings" (wading ashore from the Zodiac), so you need footwear that can handle both.
Comfortable Walking/Hiking Shoes: Bring a broken-in, closed-toe pair with good grip for navigating uneven, rocky terrain on dry landings.
Water Shoes / Reef Shoes: Non-negotiable for wet landings. They protect your feet from sharp rocks and coral as you wade to shore.
Flip-flops / Sandals: Perfect for lounging on the ship or quick trips to the sun deck.
đ¸ Accessories & Gear
Don't miss a single moment of the blue-footed boobies or Giant Tortoises!
Daypack / Small Backpack: Needed to carry water, camera, and sunscreen on excursions. Waterproof or highly water-resistant is preferred due to the spray from zodiac rides.
Camera + Extra Memory Cards / Batteries: You will take more photos than you think! Ensure you have plenty of storage and power. An underwater camera is a bonus!!
Phone + Charger / Portable Power Bank: Power outlets may be limited or tied up on the ship, so a power bank keeps you charged on the go.
Binoculars (Optional but highly recommended): For spotting finches, far-off whales, or birds in the trees. You won't regret having these.
đ Toiletries & Health: Prepare for the Elements
The GalĂĄpagos environment is stunning but requires vigilance regarding sun and insects.
Sunscreen (Reef-Safe, SPF 50+): The sun is directly overhead at the equator. Opt for mineral-based, reef-safe formulas to protect the fragile marine ecosystem.
Lip Balm with SPF: Lips are often forgotten but burn easily!
Aloe Vera / After-Sun Lotion: Just in case you miss a spot with the sunscreen.
Personal Medications (Bring Extras): Pharmacies can be scarce, so pack more than you think you need.
Seasickness Remedies: Whether itâs patches, wrist bands, or medication, be prepared. Even if you're not prone to motion sickness, the ocean can be unpredictable.
Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes can be present, especially on certain islands or in the evening.
Basic Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and soap (though these are often provided on larger ships).
⨠Nice-to-Have Luxuries
These extras elevate your trip from great to unforgettable.
Waterproof Phone Case: Provides peace of mind when snapping photos in the water or on a wet Zodiac ride.
Notebook / Journal: The GalĂĄpagos is an inspiring place. You might want to jot down observations, sketch a sea lion, or simply record the incredible details of your day.
Snorkel/Mask/Fins: Most ships provide for the excursions, but if you like your personal gear bring it along especially if you have a prescription mask.
Get ready to explore! With this list in hand, you are fully equipped to immerse yourself in one of the most unique places on Earth. Safe travels!
